TAG DIVING: INSTRUMENTAL

“The character of instrumental music… lets the emotions radiate and shine in their own character without presuming to display them as real or imaginary representations.”
Welcome to this week’s vocal-light Tag Dive, where I, the immuno-uncompromising Reliquary Tower dig through the bowels of Bandcamp for some good tunes, much like how one would dig through a dumpster in search of some good runes (schizophrenic scrawlings on a piece of cardboard). Check these out!

Bongripper – Terminal
If I was feeling lazy, this could easily have been an “Oops! All Bongripper!” article, but I’m feeling industrious today, so I only included my favorite. I’ve always gone back and forth between Terminal and Great Barrier Reefer, but I think the experience that solidified Terminal as my favorite was listening to it while I was giving blood. This album really is the soundtrack for bleeding out in the woods somewhere after being mauled by some beast (except “Terrible Bear Attack” is on Hippie Killer, but whatever). The riffs on this record are huge, they’re scary, and they’re tuned LOW. What more could you want?
Kardashev – The Baring of Shadows
I’ll admit that I haven’t heard much Kardashev. I remember thinking Liminal Rite was neat and hearing pretty underwhelming things about this year’s Alunea. At first I was a little confused as to why they’re tagged as instrumental, but eventually I realized that it’s because they released instrumental versions of all of these tracks as well. As a 25-minute endeavor, The Baring of Shadows is pretty enjoyable. The shoegaze elements really shine on this record and the heavier bits HIT. It’s given me a greater interest in checking out more from Kardashev, even if I still think the cleans are a little bit much sometimes.
Celephaïs – Becoming The Deceased
Hey look, more dreamy/shoegazey stuff! I don’t have a whole lot to say about Celephaïs’s Becoming the Deceased other than that I like it. To me it sounds like Olhava if their albums weren’t 35 minutes longer than they needed to be. Give it a spin and see if it’s your thing!
That’s all, folks! Drop some of your favorite instrumental albums/artists and I’ll check ’em out!
