This Toilet Tuesday (11/24/20)
Toilet Tuesday is upon us once more, and our ears yet again quiver in fear and lurid anticipation for the punishment we inflict upon them. Hans and Karhu have done the heavy lifting this week, picking out a couple albums worth your attention. There’s a ton of new stuff on the way, so if those don’t catch your interest, check out the list below for more.
Névoa – Towards Belief (Independent) [Spooky Blackened Post-Jazz]

“Altered Mass” is different, but not too different from the band’s previous two outings. The focus is still on percussion and repetition, now enriched with some intertwining melodies, but I maintain that fans of Altar of Plagues‘ final album might find something here. “Thrice I Breathe” brings the full-on jazz, with snare brush and everything, and while it maintains a characteristic guitar line and becomes interestingly warbly later on, I can’t help but wait for some kinda explosion. Maybe the next song will bring it; I look forward to finding out. 11/27/20 (Hans)
Arrayan Path – The Marble Gates to Apeiron (Pitch Black Records) [Power Prog]

A relatively uptempo affair for the group an featuring a looser concept than usual, The Marble Gates to Apeiron nevertheless features all the hallmarks of an Arrayan Path album. In fact, it bears the hallmarks of all the Arrayan Path albums, from the stomping rhythms, and bass breaks fitting for an epic power metal band of their calibre, melodic guitar leads and sombre vocals that make for unusually broody choruses, the symphonic elements and songwriting that recalls their progressive period with it’s unwillingness to stand still. Even though it’s not always everything in one song, it could make for a hit mess, but Arrayan Path has been around long enough for it to come around and work. 11/27/20 (Karhu)
