It was only yesterday that we finished scrubbing the last stains of November from the toilet and already December has plopped a fresh deuce into the bowl. How considerate. Unfortunately, it’s a deuce of the entirely standard variety; nothing amazing, but nothing particularly bad. Wipe, flush, repeat. W, Stockhausen, and I scraped together the best we could find below, but feel free to share anything we may have overlooked in the comments. -Spear

eoront

Eoront – Dhaar (Woflsgrimm Records) [Atmospheric Black Metal]

Stream

I only got a chance to listen to the preview trailer for Eoront’s EP Dhaar, but I’m already hooked. Delicately balancing abrasiveness against atmospherics, this album is a study in dynamics and contrasts. Managing to sound both vulnerable and daring, the dire sound of this EP has me extremely intrigued. (W.)

ZOM

ZOM – Flesh Assimilation (Invictus Productions) [Blackened Death]

Listen to “The Depths”

ZOM are a blackened death metal outfit unleashing their debut Flesh Assimilation upon the masses. This is a brutal, eviscerating product of bloodthirsty minds. Most interesting, however, are the riffs in this song. I dare you not to headbang. I double dog dare you. That’s right, you can’t. For all the rabid extremity, this is still a song that knows how to rock, so rock we shall. (W.)

deconversion

Deconversion – Incertitude of Existence (Amputated Vein) [Tech Death]

Listen to “Incertitude of Existence”

That album cover might (reasonably) lead one to believe that Deconversion play the same rancid brand of widdly-diddly-oodly-doodly as Rings of Saturn, but that’s thankfully not the case. Instead, their widdly-diddly-oodly-doodly sounds like the unholy lovechild of Obscura and Inferi, but with deeper vocals than either. It’s pretty by-the-numbers tech death with a couple time/tempo changes thrown in to mix things up a little, but the songwriting is solid and the instruments aren’t hyper-processed as per the usual tech norm. (Spear)

alkerdeel

Alkerdeel/Nihill – The Abyss Stares Back (split- Hypertension Records) [Black Metal]

Stream

We here at the Toilet love the abyss, and staring into it. With a split titled The Abyss Stares Back, I obviously couldn’t resist. This is number four in a series of five splits of the same title, this one featuring black metal acts Alkerdeel and Nihill. Short and nasty is the name of the game here, with both bands serving up a noisy, gritty wall of black metal that resembles a violent, tortured storm. Somewhere in the swirling chaos of the Alkerdeel track, a distant cry can be heard in the form of a howling, anguished vocal delivery, nearly lost amidst the ever-gnashing maelstrom of drums and guitar. The raspy growls of Nihill are more present in the mix, but no less sinister. This is one that I’ll be spinning several times over. (Stockhausen)

 famishgod

Famishgod – Devourers of Light (Xtreem Music) [Death/Doom]

Listen to “Devourer of Light”

The track “Devourers of Light” by Famishgod is a good reminder that in this world, there are doom bands, and there are DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM bands. Famishgod is the latter, bringing to life a slow motion avalanche that consumes everything with absolutely no mercy. Wave after wave of gut-wrenching growls, monolithic riffing, and steady, crushing rhythms combine for a death-laden doom release that will surely devour the light for us void-dwellers. (Stockhausen)
