Welcome to 2016’s inaugural This Toilet Tuesday! The new music has already begun to flow like milk and honey with a very strong showing this week. W, Stockhausen, Karhu, and I have picked out our favorites for your enjoyment, though there’s a lot of good stuff to be had in the list below. Enjoy!

writhe

Writhe – Writhe (Independent) [Grindcore]
Stream

Do you remember that time last summer when you were sweating your balls off at the community pool, watching people dive into the shallow end wearing tennis shoes because of all the broken beer bottles and used syringes at the bottom? Do you remember how time stood still for those few moments when Stacy-lynne McHotpantserton, the smokin’ lifeguard working the pool as a summer job before her backpacking trip to Europe during her gap year, walked out of the hut and took her seat on the elevated platform like some bronze goddess from the land of Sheba? Do you remember how your feet carried you to the diving board despite your friends’ protests that you don’t actually know how to swim? Do you remember the way you pumped your concave chest and yelped, “This is for you, Stacy-lynne” before attempting to launch into a fancy cork-screw triple salchow dive? Do you remember how you awkwardly flopped off the board, its sprung edge pendulating back up into your scrotum, splitting the vulnerable skin and causing a cascade of blood to spurt out between the thin holes in the mesh netting of your swim trunks? Do you remember how you completely missed the water and landed neck-first on the edge of the pool, severing most of your neck vertebrae and ensuring a lifetime of paralysis, incontinence, and sterility while placing untold burden on your over-extended, grieving family members and friends? Do you remember how the only thing that kept you alive through that entire ordeal was the look of horrified concern on Stacy-lynne’s cherubic face? Listening to Writhe by Writhe is kind of like that memory. FFO: Weekend Nachos, Nails, Theories 1/3/16 (W.)

the lion's daughter

The Lion’s Daughter – Existence Is Horror (Season of Mist) [Sludge]
Listen to “Mass Green Extinctus”

A Black Sea, The Lion’s Daughter’s collaborative effort with folk group Indian Blanket remains one of the most beautifully-crafted pieces of music I’ve heard in the last few years. If the title track from Existence is Horror is any indication, this new album goes much heavier on the brutal side than the group’s previous release. Interestingly, this seems to coincide with a rejection of the folk elements in favor of hardcore stylings more in-line with sludge than black metal. I’m very keen to hear how the rest of this album plays out. FFO: Deluge, The Ocean, Sorrow Plagues 1/8/16 (W.)

bode preto

Bode Preto – Mystic Massacre (Iron Tyrant Records) [Black Metal]
Stream

Bode Preto gives no fucks, means no business and gives no sheits. Imagine a less blackened, slightly modern Sarcofago, or a thrashy, frantic Goat Semen who knew better than to let the songs pass the three-minute mark and you’ll get the right idea. Original? No. Hell of a time? Yes. 1/4/16 (Karhu)

venomous concept

Venomous Concept – Kick Me Silly; VCIII (Season of Mist) [Grindpunk]
Listen to “Leper Dog”

Oh hello band that features members of Napalm Death, Brutal Truth, and Corrupt Moral Affair. I would like your tunes crammed down my screaming, bleeding gullet, thanks for asking. Why yes, I do enjoy raucously swaggering riffage over hell-bent, d-beat fury. Chug some whisky and hate mosh some posers who don’t like grindy fun? Little ol’ me? I thought you’d never ask. 1/8/16 (Stockhausen)

aborted

Aborted – Termination Redux (Century Media Records) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Termination Redux” (probably NSFW)

I hadn’t really listened to Aborted until The Necrotic Manifesto, but that instantly became one of my favorite albums of 2014. If Termination Redux’s title track is any indication, this little EP stands a good chance of topping its predecessor. While everything from the production to the writing style indicates that Redux will tread the same path as its predecessor, some small improvements- namely the variety of the riffs and general flow of the song- make it stand out. If the rest of the EP follows suit, I can see myself playing it into the ground. 1/8/16 (Spear)
