This Toilet Tuesday (9/1/20)
It’s time for your weekly dose of new music releases, and this time, Karhu’s bringing the goods with a trio of black metal recommendations of various flavors. I’m personally most looking forward to the heart-rending passion doom of Oceans of Slumber, but there’s sure to be something down there for you if nothing we’ve highlighted does it for you. Check out that list and let us know what you’re excited for this week.
Yarek Ovich – Introversion (GS Productions) [DSBM]
Stream
A fairly well-produced and strong-sounding album with dynamic songwriting ranging from shifting tremolo-picked riffs and melodies through subtle use of synths and more ideas in a five minute song than your average DSBM album’s first half. In other words, not exactly what I was looking forward to when I saw the tag. But it’s also pretty good, following rather in the veins of Totalselfhatred, who’ve never considered themselves DSBM, even closing with a cover of theirs, straddling the line between traditional, atmospheric and depressed strains of black metal with all the skill and finesse required to make it work. I’ll take this any day over some crapshit AC/DC on valium and quaaludes of Lifelover, suck shit Richter. 9/1/20 (KARHU)
Katavasia – Magnus Venator (Floga Records) [Meloblack]
Listen
A Greek “alliance” formed by a group of men who hath collaborated in the legendary Varathron, the Toilet-loved prog-blackers Aenaon and the psyched up Hail Spirit Noir among others. And it’s definitely Greek black metal, recognizable from the first note, yet never derivative of others. Relying on lengthy tremolo passages and foregoing the thrashy riff and jerking rhythms often associated with the scene, simultaneously cutting some of their similarities to trad metal, and fully embracing their melodicism. And goddamn are these some sing-along riffs, so much in fact the band added choirs to sing along to them. 9/4/20 (KARHU)
Eurynomos – From the Valleys of Hades (Iron Pegasus Records) [Black Thrash]
Preview
I did not think this album would ever happen. But here it is, the full-length from Eurynomos, the black/thrash group founded by Occulto, who’s raw vocals are still missed by many in Desaster. It’s just a teaser with snippets of songs, so it’s hard to say much about the album based on it, but it seems to take a more violent, direct and raw route, simple riffs and pounding rhythms, as opposed to the melodic, medieval approach of Occulto’s previous band. A snägäri-fight as opposed to a spectral war with demons. But that’s stylistically, not qualitatively, because Eurynomos also sounds very, really good. And like they packed a surprising amount of variety into their songwriting for something so simplistically raw. 9/4/20 (KARHU)
