O Frigid Feculator, O Hershey-Squirt Heresiarch, take the plunge for Thy acolytes, that we may flush free. This week, we’ve got glass bones and paper skin, assured misunderstanding of psychosexual development, and church nuts. Overtoun – Death Drive Anthropology (Time to Kill Records) [Deathrash]
The “death drive” is not just an antiquated theory of Freud’s; it’s also an apt descriptor of the violence committed by yours truly whilst barreling down side streets in my 2012 Honda Civic to Overtoun’s latest deathrash delicacy. From the acerbic gallop that introduces the title track to the fluid cymbal work throughout (I’m reminded of Richard Christie’s work with Death and Control Denied), the band throws the whole grimoire at listeners in terms of intensity. Vocalist Yoav Ruiz-Feingold steers clear of my cardinal sin of deathrash (not enough death, especially in the vocals) with a slew of gutturals amidst the OSDM rasps; together with the album’s dense, impactful production, Death Drive Anthropology is set to drive itself deep into my external auditory meatuses this Friday.
