It’s a Toilet Tuesday, and holy shit look at all that music! This is a pretty solid week for new releases, and Hans, Bert Banana, and I have each picked out a couple for you to check out. Give those a listen and hit that list for more.

Phantom Winter – Into Dark Science (Golden Antenna Records) [Sludge]
Listen to “Ripping Halos From Angels”

We recently had a thread about hateful sludge over at the Social Club, and I’d like to retroactively add this, because god damn. At first it seems like “Ripping…” sticks to staples of the genre with the slow temp and tons of feedback, but the drawn-out calmer (if not friendlier) part shows these guys can explore darkness from different angles and keep it compelling. Vocals are noteworthy as well, keeping it varied with two to three styles, at least one of which sounds utterly deranged. They do come off a bit goofy in the second track, but overall, I’m rather enchanted by this racket. 3/2/18 (Hans)

Voidhanger – Dark Days of the Soul (Agonia Records) [Death/Thrash]
Listen to “Death Wish”

Not much is missing for this to pass as grindcore. If it wasn’t for that somewhat elaborate bridge part, we’d basically be there. It’s a tight af genre mix that absolutely rages. I’m not 100% down with the vocalist, but his bark fits pretty well most of the time. Reminds me of Die Choking in terms of intensity and general style. 3/2/18 (Hans)

Fecalizer – Fecal Inferno (Coyote Records) [lolbuttz]
Listen to “Even so I have to kill you”

Seeing the “lolbuttz” tag on this grabbed my interest and man, were my expectations high (or low). However, I see Spear has a sense of humour and is dubbing regular ol’ Goregrind as “lolbuttz.” [Spear note: I stand by this assessment] Nice try, homie. I see the game you’re playing. The released single “Even so I have to kill you” is dank shit. Some slow ass, groovy Goregrind to raise your motherfucking hammers to. I’m talking some Gutalax slow ass, grooves…but with some filthy, Brujeria style vo-kills (cause they’re Mexican). Can’t hate on that, man. However, if their previous album The Walking Dead Invasion can give us any indication of how this record is going to sound, there’s going be some rippers on this album. Slammy ass riffs? Check! Blastbeats? Check! Grimy ass gutturals? Check! Production sounds like it’s top notch (especially for a goregrind album). Don’t let that “lolbuttz” tag fool you. Fecalizer is top notch shit and I would argue, probably one of the better bands in this silly, little genre called Goregrind. Go check out one of their older albums, Gore Galore. Killer stuff. The only beef I got is the lack of Bandcamp page, but I’m putting that on Coyote Records. Here’s an idea: Promote your shit. 3/1/18 (BertBanana)

Ancst – Ghosts of the Timeless Void (Lifeforce Records) [Crust/Black Metal]
Listen

I’ve covered Ancst a few times in the past here; I’m a big fan of their vigorous melodic mixture of black metal and crusty hardcore, and Ghosts of the Timeless Void does not disappoint on that front. Not too much has changed since 2016’s Moloch, but it feels a fair bit bleaker than their past material- not surprising, given their politically-charged lyrics. The chunky first half of “Unmasking the Imposters,” clean guitar-driven “Dysthymia,” and light, floaty opening of “Self-Portrait” make for some welcome surprises, but the meat of the experience is largely what you’re used to hearing from them. They stick to the formula, but they’ve tightened it up by using more riffs per song and repeating fewer sections. It’s as aggressive and powerful as ever, and that’s what counts. 3/2/18 (Spear)

Rolo Tomassi – Time Will Die And Love Will Bury It (Holy Roar) [Post-Hardcore]
Stream

Rolo Tomassi is one of my favorite Toilet discoveries, and the news they were putting out a new album this year came as a pleasant surprise. Their weird combination of gentle post-punk and devastating mathcore continues to grow more cohesive and focused; check out “Aftermath” and “Rituals” in sequence to see how well it works together. This is one of the most interesting and unique bands in their scene, and Time Will Die And Love Will Bury It is shaping up to be a hell of an album. 3/2/18 (Spear)
