This Toilet Tuesday (3/2/21)
Toilet Tuesday: that most wonderful day of the week, when we get blasted with a shitload of new music that we’ll never have time to listen to or fully appreciate. And a shitload of it is apparently pretty good this week, too; Hans and Karhu have a bunch of recommendations for you this week, and there’s still a pretty extensive list beyond that. Wilderness of Mirrors – Woodland Ghosts EP (Independent) [Sludge/Post-Metal]

Solid one-man sludge/post-metal, all instrumental but furnished with some very atmospheric synths. He calls it “lo-fi” in the liner notes, but the production isn’t bad at all, packing a sufficient punch. 3/1/21 (Hans)
Wolvennest – Temple (Van Records) [Psychedelic Blackish Metal]

I hope that genre tag isn’t completely outdated [Spear note: it probably is], because that sounds a bit more interesting than what this track offers. It’s essentially goth doom that veers off into a kind of ritualistic vibe somewhere along the middle. That’s not a bad thing, especially since the singer goes hard on the goth vibes, just not what I expected. Nicely moody affair though. Curious to check out what the rest of the album is like. 3/5/21 (Hans)
Cthonica – Lesser Incantations of Chthonic Lore (Sentient Ruin) [Black Metal]

Points deducted right away for inconsistent spelling of “chthonic.” Apart from that, I’m on board, because why wouldn’t I be; it’s murky, monolithic black metal, merrily blasting along for most of the time and featuring some nicely odd, growled (?) vocals. The rickety drum sound is and added bonus. 3/5/21 (Hans)
Baest – Necro Sapiens (Century Media) [Death Metal]

Word on the streets is that Baest is the best of the new OSDM wave. And as far as the clean-cut, “70% meinings, 30% riffs, I’m a death metal fan so I can’t fathom influences beyond Death” gang goes, it might be so. Sorry if that came off as snarky, I didn’t mean it to. No, really. They sound like they’re really fun live (which they are), and they’re not too caught up in the rules of OSDM (which isn’t to say they don’t follow them). It’s not going to make your EOTY list, but that doesn’t mean you’re not going to have a good time with it. 3/5/21 (KARHU)
Abominable Putridity – Parasitic Metamorphosis Manifestation (Inherited Suffering Records) [Brutal Death Metal]

I don’t who’s in this band anymore, and I don’t care. It’s a bit cleaner than I generally care for my slam, but they’ve also moved an inch towards brutal death metal in a more general sense, since I last heard of them. Doesn’t excel at any particular facet of brutal death or slam, but it’s pretty good at most, perhaps even all, of them. 3/1/21 (KARHU)
