Obsidian Tongue – Eclipsing Worlds of Scorn (Profound Lore Records) [Prog Black]
Eclipsing Worlds of Scorn brings to mind the weird fiction of Jeff VanderMeer; like his Southern Reach trilogy, Obsidian Tongue’s music is composed of swirling dissonance, moments of beauty, and a relationship with sanity best described as “tenuous.” From shrill Yellow Eyes chords to the crystalline clean tones of Deafheaven‘s post-black metal, the band refuses to retain the shape of a single organism. Through creative, fluid songwriting, the membrane between genres is rendered permeable: “To Forgive Oneself” morphs between a classic melodeath/doom style (replete with goth crooning) and the black ‘n roll swagger of Rhûn with neither sound appearing vestigial. We’ll have to wait for Friday to begin sequencing the album’s DNA, but rest assured, the species will be new to science. -Roldy
