It’s me again, your perennial substitute teacher/absentee father. Rolderathis was struck by a divine bolt from the heavens over the weekend as he was dispatched to the frozen pits of Cocytus to re-kill Ronald Reagan, so I’m filling in on TTT duties today (Roldy will be back next week). Devenial Verdict – Old Blood – Fresh Wounds (Transcending Obscurity) [Death Metal]
My first impression upon hearing the tunes on this record was that it felt like a step back from the band’s two previous efforts on Transcending Obscurity, being much simpler and straightforward than the proggy masterpieces of Ash Blind and Blessing of Despair. It turns out that it is indeed a literal step back in time rather than a regression in skill; Old Blood – Fresh Wounds is a refresh and revisit of Devenial Verdict’s older material. It’s much easier to approach and appreciate it with that in mind, and it’s interesting to see how far they’ve come since their foundation two decades ago. –Spear
