This week, we’ve got strange tunings, sanguine matriarchs, and circles of incisors. The Bowl’s arid rays have rendered the waters ov Bowl quite low this time around, but in the sludge lies mysteries waiting to be uncovered. As always, let us know what we missed in the comments!
Gold Spire – Steps into Shadow (Awakening Records) [Prog Death]
After Stefan Pettersson’s tragic passing and the dissolution of Usurpress, Påhl Sundström joined forces with his brother Erik to flesh out musical ideas left unheard in the wake of Interregnum; these sessions ultimately led to the creation of a new project, Gold Spire, that married progressive songwriting with jazz overtones and death metal heft. 5 years on, Steps into Shadow showcases a band still exploring the boundaries of their style, incorporating black ‘n roll riffing alongside the band’s signature saxophone spine, courtesy of Magnus Kjellstrand. Far from an ornament, the woodwind adds intriguing textures that pierce through these dense compositions without crowding out the usual suspects. Together with a new vocalist (Floating‘s Arvid Sjödin) whose gutturals drip with menace, Steps into Shadow is poised to eclipse its predecessor in both variety and extremity. I’d love to hear the whole thing ahead of Friday, but for now we’ll need to hold our horses. -Roldy
