This morning, I didn’t know what a Euphonium was, nor a Baryton. It’s obvious by now I’m a sucker for auxiliary instruments in black metal, especially when they’ve melded into the compositions’ DNA. The brass and strings, paired with simplistic (yet emotionally impactful) meloblack riffing, create a sound that’s somehow comfy and energizing at once. With influences ranging from Amon Amarth‘s harmonized tremolos to the downtrodden cleans of Woods of Ypres, Heavenly Down transitions between genres with the ease befitting a band that’s been around three decades. Now, if you need me, I’ll be preparing for a desperate charge against insurmountable odds. -Roldy
