Somnuri – Desiderium (MNRK Heavy) [Sludge]
Somnuri dares ask the question, “What if Isis did death metal riffs a couple times and also got really into Baroness?” The two preview tracks up have all the majesty and extraordinary girth one expects from this sector of the Sludge-o-sphere and a healthy ear for riffs that party. If you like your proggy sludge to rock, you want this right the fuck now. 7/21/23 (Spear)
The Zenith Passage – Datalysium (Metal Blade) [Tech Death]
This has been pretty The Facelessy since 2016’s Solipsist, and I’d go as far as to say they’re even more Facelessy than The Faceless at this point. Just how Facelessy? Project mastermind Justin McKinney did a brief stint in The Faceless before being like “nah fuck that” and snapping up two other former members of The Faceless. That’s pretty damn Facelessy! Anyway, this thing feels like a direct evolution of Planetary Duality (due in no small part to Brandon Giffin and Derek Rydquist both having been on that album, I’m sure), and it’s pretty much exactly what you’d want from this style of tech. Super tight instrumental work, catchy machine gun riffing, and plenty of spooky alien prog shit. 7/21/23 (Spear)
