This week, we’ve got stinky brains, Diablo-core, and pale Lepidopterans. We have entered the nadir of summer metal release numbers, but fear not: myriad genres are represented below, and dookie dilettantes will surely find something to savor in yonder shallow bowl.
Godagainst – Devouring Nameless Abyss (Iron, Blood and Death Corporation) [Death]
I’ve recently taken up birding as a hobby; thus, this flock of intertwined avian anomalies caught my eye as talons hook through flesh. Godagainst perch in the same canopy as tech-y brutal death bands like Nile and Hour of Penance, but favor mid-range death growls in place of gutturals, along with some trace elements of thrash. Where the aforementioned bands can become somewhat muddy in their drop-Z riffing, Devouring Nameless Abyss is impressively clear in its balanced production, allowing each sharp peck of a cymbal to reach our ears and pluck at our nerves. The songwriting in the preview track “Where Darkness Prevails” isn’t particularly inventive, but these Chileans aren’t here to attract attention with brilliant plumage; in their two decades as a band, they’ve taken the opposite approach, skulking in the shadows, ready to strike with lethal precision. -Roldy
