Another Tuesday, another day I have unfortunately woken up and not simply disintegrated in my sleep. But hey, at least it’s a good week for death metal with gross dudes on the cover art, so that makes it all worth it. If nasty faces with riffs at nastiness parity aren’t your thing, that’s okay; there’s plenty of other stuff coming out too. Check out the bands Karhu and I picked and let us know what else you’re jamming this week.

Dalisay – Ang Trahedya ng Dalisay at Ketungin (Surrogate/Screaming Skull Records) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Karnal,” “Ang Trahedya ng Dalisay at Ketungin”

OSDM that actually sounds old-school. I’m not one to complain about such things, but it’s impossible to deny that Dalisay has a firm grasp on that late 80’s/early 90’s sound, enough that I probably could have been convinced this came out around the same time as Scream Bloody Gore or Altars of Madness had I not already known it was out this week. It’s death metal with a thrashy, “oops we made prog because our understanding of songwriting is much more tenuous than our ability to riff” thing going on, and it’s pretty sweet. 9/15/21 (Spear)

Infestment – Evulsion of Mortal Birth (Maggot Stomp) [Death Metal]
Listen to “No Human Grace”

Death metal with that desirably rotten sound. Death metal with guitars playing in harmony, but out of unison. Riffs that sound like they were cut off at the tail and edited together in a rush, leaving the bit where they loop off. And of course, indecipherable low gurgles for vocals. Or vokills as the band probably calls them. Sometimes it’s worth the while to remind yourself that Maggot Stomp sometimes releases good shit also. Infestment won’t live in your skull forever, or make your EOTY list, come season, but they’re that good shit also. 9/17/21 (Karhu)

Occulsed – Crepitation of Phlegethon (Everlasting Spew) [Death Metal]
Listen

If, on the other hand, you’d prefer your death metal all about those short, fast-to-mid paced tracks that’ll change tempo or feel out of the blue and wield sharp tremolo riffs, endless descending grooves and the idea of USDM circa early 90’s as a weapon, it is to your figurative left that you must look to find that which you will like very much indeed. For Occulsed, the latest brainchild of veterans from all too many bands, including, but not limited to, Father Befouled and Encoffination9/17/21 (Karhu)
