This Toilet Tuesday (9/22/20)
Toilet Tuesday comes in like a lion this week, with one of the larger lists we’ve had in the past month or two. It’s a pretty solid one, too; a lot of the stuff on here felt like it bore digging in, even some of the types of tunes I don’t typically listen to. Karhu and I have picked out a couple albums you won’t want to skip, but there’s plenty more where those came from down below.
Ardente – Le Château sous les Étoiles (Secret Corridor) [Black Metal]

If you’ve been looking for that second wave black metal with nifty riffs, a French feel, distinctly anti-fash flavour and a medieval melodic taste, Secret Corridor’s Vöghräth’s got a proposition for you in the form of Ardente, and Le Chateau Sous Les Etoiles‘ two songs (and an intro & outro) are indeed a very good start. 9/21/20 (Karhu)
Emyn Muil – Afar Angathfark (Northern Silence) [Nerd Black Metal]

If you haven’t had enough of percussion programmed vaguely to resemble the general idea of tribal drums, in sequences not meant to be played by human hands; plentiful, somewhat folkish synth melodies enveloping everything in fuzzy warmth with the distant noise of growls and bellows about something or other going down in Middle-Earth and vaguely riff reminiscent guitar noises, Emyn Muil has got you pegged down. Yes, it’s Summoning time. Three albums down and Emyn Muil has made it quite clear there will be no attempts at forming their own take on the sound, in fact I can’t recall any other band in the vein with so little going for them besides Summoning. There’s a few differences to the “mother band” but they come off more as failures to imitate than attempts to deviate. Still, Emyn Muil has always been good at what they do, and that isn’t likely to change, so even though Afar Angathfark may not survive for more than a few spins, it ought to tide you over to the next TTT. 9/25/20 (Karhu)
Bloodletter – Funeral Hymns (Independent) [Thrash]

Turns out clean-sounding thrash touched up with melodeath-style guitarmonies and sweet chord voicings is totally my jam. Who could have guessed? The two songs up from Funeral Hymns are super melodic and fast as hell, and the first one’s about getting hunted by a wolf ghost after disturbing a tomb, so you know you’re in for a good time. They’ve got a pretty stacked list of guest musicians on this album, too (featuring members of Immortal Bird, Exmortus, Toxic Ruin, and more), so I’m pretty excited for this to hit. 9/25/20 (Spear)
