Odorous portal; vile lavatory; putrid potty. By many names is the Bowl known, and ye shall know it by the stank of its contents. This week, we’ve got clock-core, fly balls, and black holes. Narrenwind – Gorzkie plony (Pagan Records) [Black ‘n Roll / Post-Punk / Heavy Metal]
Narrenwind draws from the wells of several genres with their 5th LP, Gorzkie plony: breezy, atmoblack riffing (think Agalloch‘s Pale Folklore) intertwines with post-punk’s driving beats and shimmering guitars (“Na próżno”), resulting in a sound that summons sunglasses to listeners’ faces. While much of the record proceeds at a stomping, black ‘n roll tempo, tracks like “Idzie zmierzch” and “I-II, I-II” utilize double bass kicks for bursts of speed that feel more propulsive for their rarity. Black ‘n roll trends toward simplicity by nature, but Narrenwind has a strong grasp on chord voicings, adding technical flair to simple song structures; it’s this clever balance that will have me returning to Gorzkie plony whenever I need my cool-guy-in-glasses metal fix.
