This Toilet Tuesday (9/22/15)
Another week, another Toilet Tuesday. Another wave of new releases washes over us, sweeping us away in a tide of purifying filth. This week’s offering has tremendous variety, pulling from all spheres of metal. There’s something here for everyone, so you should be able to find something you like. You’d BETTER find something you like. I’ve got my eye on you.
Acherontas/Horna – Atavistic Resurgence (split- WTC Productions) [Black Metal]
Stream
W.T.C. (World Terror Committee) Productions has had a fruitful year, offering up a veritable feast of quality black metal releases from their ever-increasing stable of bands. September 22nd sees that trend continue with this quality split between Acherontas and Horna. Even though both bands released full-lengths this year, they have proved they still have fuel for the fire with exclusive tracks being recorded for Atavistic Resurgence. Acherontas bookend their passage with some more of the mysterious and exotic ambiance found on February’s Ma-Ion, with the focal point (‘Gospel Of Saturn’) being 7-minutes of unbridled evil. Horna waste no time picking up the tail with two tracks of the hell they are renown for, coupled with their full-length (stab to read Bear’s review) that also comes out on the 22nd, this split is not to be missed. FFO: Occult-laden Black Metal. 9/22/15 (Lacertillian)
Dark Buddha Rising – Inversum (Neurot Recordings) [Doom]
Listen to “ESO,” “EXO”
DBR is known for their hypnotic, dooming, droning, psychedelic amalgamation of… noises. Inversum offers more of the same, yet not “more of the same”, if you catch my drift. On their Neurot Recordings-debut the band puts emphasis on the doom side and things seem a little clearer. It was only on Dakhmandal that the band added a(nother) vocalist to their ranks, yet Inversum already a change in that position, meanwhile the vocals have again become more prominent. If not by their amount then by the significance of their role. Almost like the spin-off adventures in Atomikylä would’ve filtered away the part of DBR’s souns that most overlapped with theirs. An honest review: Good, good, good, good, good. 9/22/15 (Karhu)
Gloryhammer – Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards (Napalm Records) [Power Metal]
Listen to “Universe on Fire,” “Rise of the Chaos Wizards”
As we all know, Gloryhammer’s 2013 debut, Tales From the Kingdom of Fife, is objectively the greatest piece of music ever written. For some reason, other so-called “musicians” continued to put out their works (all of which I’ve ignored), foraging for scraps of relevance and legitimacy in the wake of this paragon of truest art. Now Gloryhammer has returned with a follow-up that promises to be the final nail in the coffin of the rest of these posers. Their already immaculate sound has somehow been tightened even further; the greater use of keyboards and choirs makes the music sound fuller while retaining their characteristic exuberant riffs and mighty choruses. Cast aside the rest of this dreck; Gloryhammer is all you need. 9/25/15 (Spear)
Snail – Feral (Small Stone Recordings) [Psychedelic Doom]
Listen to “Building a Haunted House”
On Feral, Snail seem to be following a WYSIWYG modus operandi. Fuzzed out psychedelic riffs? Check. Dreamy vocals? Check. Album art featuring mushrooms and/or woodland critters? Check. This album is chill, man. Chill as a bill. [Note: This was a favorite saying of one of my old stoner pals]. I can dig it. FFO: Mammatus, Helms Alee, KJM 9/25/15 (W.)
