Greetings and welcome again to This Toilet Tuesday, fellow flushketeers. Unfortunately, there aren’t a whole lot of big releases to get excited about this week (I’m not 100% sold on that new Decapitated album yet), but there’s a hell of a lot of variety. It’s like the inevitable superpoop you take after eating at a bunch of dive bars on a long road trip; the food may not have seemed special at the time, but when the deed is done you will gaze fondly upon the remnants of meals past and the memories that came with them. Take some time to enjoy the little things (and little bands) this week. -Spear

zurvan

Zurvan – Land of Nothingness (Depressive Illusions) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Sludge”

Zurvan are a pretty raw experiment in black metal. The rhythm guitar holds down a bedrock riff while the vocalist shreds his throat in a worrisome manner. The production leaves something to be desired, but the strange tone of the guitar solo and the high-mix drums are just part of the necro charm. Plus, there’s an interesting orchestrated segment near the end that adds an extra dimension to the blood-letting. This likely won’t make it to my end of year list, but I could probably give this album a few shakes so long as I don’t have to watch any more lulzy videos. Plus, I don’t know enough bands that start with the letter Z.

blood storm

Blood Storm – The Stellar Exorcism (Barbarian Wrath) [Black/Thrashl]
Listen to “Howling Void”

Now this is more like it! The production is raw, but that pummeling drum line provides a solid foundation to launch fuzzy black riffs and oddly thrashy vocals snarling about the great Old Ones. This is a pretty rocking experiment in black metal melded with thrash and rock. I can dig it. Plus, that squealing lead about halfway through is tasty.

priests of ba'al

Priests of Ba’al – Divining the Akashic Records for Satanic Apotheosis (Independent) [Symphonic Black Metal]
Stream

The cover art for “Divining the Akashic Records for Satanic Apotheosis” provides a much more accurate depiction of Priests of Ba’al’s sound than a few measly sentences ever could, but here goes anyway.  Priests of Ba’al play big, epic, Abigail Williams-style black metal, but with a touch more “black” than the latter.  The production is surprisingly sharp for an independent black metal act; no element of their sound overwhelms the mix and it’s not painfully lo-fi.  The lyrics are fittingly epic, delivered in a raspy growl over big tremolo-picked riffs and furious, tight drumming.  The whole wicked package is topped off with a worthy cover of Emperor’s “Encorcelled by Khaos.”
