Cobra the Impaler – Karma Collision (Listenable Records) [Metalcore / Groove Metal]
Karma Collision caught my owl eyes immediately with its John Baisley x Dark Souls artwork. Beneath the mantle of the mycologist lies bouncy, Gojiran grooves, simple, effective tapping leads, and layered vocals that toe the line between gruff and clean styles. By the time the octave chords and bluesy twang à la Mutoid Man appear in the song’s latter half, the mycelium have taken root in my brain, and I am helpless but to listen again. If the chaotic album art is any indication, there will be many influences throughout the album, and I (Roldy, the owl, not the fungus, promise!) cannot wait to buy Cobra the Impaler’s new album, Karma Collision, on Friday, May 31, 2024 on Listenable Records. –Fungus Roldy
