Track Premiere: Invultation– Frenzied Catechesis

The genre classification of bestial death, more or less the blend of death and black metal most call war metal, has always been at least somewhat amusing to me. Giggle as I may, I think that Invultation‘s Andrew Lamp is probably just as worthy of the designation as anyone musician could be. After all, it usually takes at least three knuckleheads to make this kind of music come out of a shitty house PA; Invulation is just one lone sicko. In his one-man-moniker, Invultation specializes in the kind of overwhelming music made for silly merchandise and disconcerting mosh pits in smelly bars.
The sound of “Frenzied Catechesis,” the lead single for the upcoming Inferno Descends album, is rooted in various different extreme metal acts. The indelible mark of Slayer lingers heavy in the riffs crafted for this song, as does the works of acts like Blasphemy and Beherit. At the same time, the mid-section brings slower, massive riffs backed by a synth layer, akin to Morbid Angel or Nocturnus at their headiest. This is sandwiched between two movements of hurried percussive blasts and vitriolic walls of immense guitar, soundtracking the mad snarls of an unsightly creature. It’s as tough and animalistic as you’d want a record like this to be, while also being technically proficient enough to stand out in a field of stoned idiots buying up the town’s supply of black and white makeup. In a sense, Lamp’s musical endeavors more than worthy of “bestial” status.
The project had this to say about the ideas behind “Frenzied Catechesis” and Inferno Decends:
“The world is under constant threat from indoctrination into the cult of violent madness. Where the flames burn brightest, sanity has been snuffed out.”
About the album, the band says:
“Humanity has brought its destruction upon itself through its endless desire for conquest and masochism – the culmination of our terminal illness bringing about a cleansing fire. The inferno now descends to burn away the mistakes of a people gone mad.”
A good bit more cataclysmic than I was expecting, but befitting a fiery single like this one.
Inferno Descends is out on October 30th via Sentient Ruin.
