Meet your dooooom!

Was that ominous enough? Is that how you do it? As a card-carrying death/doom disliker, I’m a bit out of my depth with today’s premiere for turtle-tempo’d upstarts Ritual Ascension. “Slow and crushing,” their label Sentient Ruin says, and somewhat inspired by Grave Upheaval and Temple Nightside. I’ve certainly heard some of those words before.

Ah, but upon finding out that these folks are not upstarts at all, even I can gather my bearings, for while newly-formed, Ritual Ascension features members from stalwart peddlers of murk such as Void Rot, Aberration, and Suffering Hour. Why, this seems tailor-made, if not for me, then certainly for this Toilet!

And boy, what a log they’ve dropped off here. In the course of no less (but maybe slightly more) than 13 minutes, “Kolob (At the Throne of Elohim)” from the upcoming debut Profanation of the Adamic Covenant will wrap its pitch-black tendrils around you and slowly crush you with exactly the expertise you’d expect given the project’s pedigree.

I still might not become a convert to the slow cause any time soon, but even I have to respect the commitment. If you’re gonna put blast beats on the back burner, you better be brutally heavy and suffocatingly dark, and I think they’ve succeeded on that front. On top of that, the band really stick to the “ritual” part of their name:

Kolob (at the Throne of Elohim) and the album as a whole guides the listener through the sacred rituals that occur in the holy sanctums of Mormon temples. Perverse signs and tokens, sworn under divine oath, offered to Elohim through the veil as the hand of god molests those who have been washed and anointed.

So whadda ya say? Bar raised for death/doom in 2025?

Profanation of the Adamic Covenant will be out on February 28 via Sentient Ruin. Pre-order here:
