At long last, spring is here: black metal bands are returning to their bedrooms for hibernation, and symphonic fare wafts on the wind in all its Gorgonzolan glory. Lift up that lid and pop a squat—there’s something for everyone in this bowl.
Kaal Akuma – Turiya (Nuclear Winter Records) [Blackened Death]
Kaal Akuma is a relatively young act, but they project the sound of an entity that’s been imprisoned in dirt for millennia. This style of longform blackened death usually comes swathed in a shroud of reverb, but thankfully, every minute of Turiya‘s tremolo riffs and blasts reaches listeners undiluted. Even in the relative calm at the preview track’s midpoint, a sense of dread and lurking pain pervades; the band is all too willing to make good on this promise. -Roldy
