Premiere: Leylines – “Spineless”
Start your day off right with everyone’s favorite subject: math.
Or, well, mathcore. Mathcore-adjacent metalcore? Whatever you want to call it, we’ve got a brand-new jam from Leylines today, a new project comprised of current and former members of Through The Eyes of the Dead, Aeonoesis, The Contortionist, Circuit of Suns, and Graveborn. We have had plenty of good things to say about these projects a few times before, and with a pedigree like that, I was more than happy to jump on this premiere. Today, we’re bringing you “Spineless” from their upcoming self-titled EP.
Now, if that mathcore tag scared you off, you can come back without fear. While the band cites acts such as Ion Dissonance, Carbomb, and Frontierer as influences, the more overt mathcore sensibilities- the chaos, the changing time signatures, all that- are centered around chunky, bouncy grooves. For all the wild flair in the instruments, there’s a rhythmic through line that’s not just easy to follow but infectious, keeping your head bobbing through even the song’s most chaotic moments. Much like the aforementioned Frontierer, these guys make mathcore fun, and this first taste has me looking forward to the rest of the album.
