Maladie – Symptoms IV (Apostasy Records) [Who Fucking Knows, Man]
Knowing nothing about Maladie ahead of time and only having seen descriptions of them online, I went into this expecting some proggy black metal. What “Rebirth” gave me was instead a sort of hard rock/heavy metal with a lot of… interesting instrumental choices. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but there was a moment just shy of a minute in that had me cackling until I started coughing- laughing with the band, mind you, not at them. All the weirdness fortifies what is otherwise a solid rollicking jam and definitely helps it stand out from anything else it might otherwise resemble. Just listen to it and you’ll understand why it’s shot to the top of my most-anticipated album of the week. 11/29/24 (Spear)
