Melpomene – A Body Is a Suggestion (Independent) [Prog Doom / Death / Post-Metal / Instrumental]
Melpomene’s debut LP is a celebration of both identities and the liminal states between them; a kaleidoscope of genre and emotion as tumultuous as an inner monologue. Lead single “Deadname” begins in a modern groove metal mold—reminiscent of Truent‘s punchy production and complex rhythms—before transitioning through a dizzying array of styles. Influences as diverse as Corelia‘s melodic/technical metalcore and the sludgy chugs of Gateways to Annihilation-era Morbid Angel imbue the track with an adventurous spirit that refuses simple classification. The album is entirely instrumental, a form that sometimes fails when using even the simplest ingredients; it’s a testament to the band’s songwriting prowess that they can weave these disparate elements together without a vocal backbone and remain engaging throughout.
