The Depth Beneath UsDescent
Independent/A Thousand Arms | August 1, 2025

On their latest album, Descent, Harrisburg’s The Depth Beneath Us play a hard-nosed, prog-infused brand of “maximalist” post-rock that sacrifices neither atmosphere nor edge in its pursuit of both. The Depth Beneath Us are riffy like Russian Circles, theatric like God is an Astronaut, and deceptively delicate like Red Sparowes. I’m even reminded at times of Undertow-era Tool without any of the baggage. Openers “Trust Thermocline” and “Cluster B” could fill a stadium. Standouts “Head and the Transient Love” and “Apollonian” are narrative bliss. The titular “Descent” shines. Unrelated: Micah Parsons is also from Harrisburg. Thanks, Jerry. Go Pack Go.

Bad Beat LP 2025
Triple B Records | May 23, 2025

I wrote about Bad Beat’s nasty split with D-Bloc in May as a little amuse bouche to the LP that landed later that month. It’s been in steady rotation since then. LP 2025 takes all the spitting rage of Outbreak’s You Make Us Sick, the weightroom mentality of Rampage, and the effortless swagger of Mental and Righteous Jams, and smashes them together like crash test dummies on the Ford assembly line. Take a breather with the beachy “Jazz Beat” before you lose your stupid fucking marbles to “Wasted Time.” Someone tell Spoiler he can tattoo that cover on my back.

Friarbird Ornithologies
Fiadh Productions | July 25, 2025

Most of the time, I am treated with an unending love by the peerless Fiadh Productions. Tape orders come with amazing vegan recipes, stickers, download codes, and squishy little guys. It’s a bounty I don’t deserve. But then—and these moments are rare!—something is released as a Subscriber Exclusive that breaks my plover-adoring heart. Ornithologies is just that. A creature of exquisite charm and calming beauty that remains at a distance. The avian synth sounds held therein are as timeless as George Raper’s watercolours. Everything is at peace once night veils the starlings. (Everything Grayfriar is a mere $4!)

Endless Swarm The Body Hammer
Independent | August 31, 2025

I loved 2023’s Manifested Forms, but it took a text from a dear friend to put the new Endless Swarm on my radar with the quickness. Another 20 tracks of skull-rotting, flesh-cracking, grinding powerviolence. Imagine an absolutely feral XfilesX. Imagine Brutal Truth but they’re playing the first Weekend Nachos EPs with fewer breakdowns and faster riffs. Imagine Crucial Unit spiking their own premium iced tea, chugging it, and then belligerently threatening whatever schmuck spiked their drink. If this were the late ’90s or early 2000s, your local distro dealer would call you a poseur if you didn’t buy this. Poseur.

Augur Arcane Insurgency
Independent | August 6, 2025

Listening to “Born from a Corpse,” I am drawn to this passage from Freud’s 1915 essay “Reflection Upon War and Death”: “So powerful a prohibition can only be directed against an equally powerfully impulse. What no human soul desires there is no need to prohibit; it is automatically excluded. The very emphasis of the commandment Thou shalt not kill makes it certain that we spring from an endless ancestry of murderers, with whom the lust for killing was in the blood, as possibly it is to this day with ourselves.” Thusly arrives “Retaliator,” perhaps my favourite black metal track of 2025.

AND SO WE FLUSH.
