Heksproces – Dejlig er Jorden (Independent) [Blackened Doom / Sludge / Post-Metal]
There’s a fine line between hypnotic songwriting and being waterboarded with music; one repetition too many can tip the scales into torture, especially for bands playing at lower tempos. Denmark’s Heksproces can get away with a minute straight of single note palm-muting because they’ve made sure to drape details over this foundation: bluesy clean guitars reverberate and subtle cymbal-work fills in the empty spaces. With a shock of distortion, the band shifts into blackened sludge in the vein of Chorosia; what little melody pierces the muck is warped and eerie, channeling Conjurer‘s lingering dread. A post-metal crescendo allows some light through the cracks in “Lys Formørker”‘s final moments, but I have a feeling (perhaps informed by the self-immolation in the artwork?) these glimmers of hope will be sparse across Dejlig er Jorden‘s runtime. -Roldy
