Minenfeld – Instruments of Industrialized Warfare (Fucking Kill Records) [Death]
Look, I know it’s hack shit to compare a modern death metal group to Bolt Thrower at this point, but, for God’s sake, it’s in the damn Bandcamp tags! That out of the way, Minenfeld are a German death metal group who write songs about WW1 from an anti-nationalist perspective, perfectly fitting a time period that begins to mirror ours. Compared to their 2019 full-length, the two currently available singles from Instruments Of Industrialized Warfare sport a tighter, claustrophobic sound that aids in selling the heaviness of their blistering assaults, which give way to slower, groovier segments (like you know who…). Truth is, this niche is filled to the point of overflowing, but I really like what Minenfeld are going for here: taking the sort of lyrical themes associated with compatriots Kanonenfieber, just with far less melody and far more “growling in your face while beating your head against the asphalt.” “Crush Nationalism” indeed, my friends. – Sean Ghoulson
