Blush It Bluriday: Bluemaggedon

It’s time for Woke 3.0. It’s time for Shakira Law.
Let’s start this article with an acknowledgement: America is still fucked. We still live under capitalism if you’re within the states, and the boot of American Exceptionalism is still a contemptible force on the world stage. Trump is still president and, at best, there’s still a lot of work to be done. The metaphorical copper wiring isn’t going to magically find its way back into the wall and the damage done by The Good Ol’ Perverts and The Ketamine Kid will probably take years to fix (at best). Moreover, the Democratic Party is still headed by corporate interests and decrepit ghouls who are happy to remind you that their allegiance stands with everyone but the working class; that’s a serious issue that has to be reckoned with if any real reform or progress is to be made. No politician, no matter how charming they are or how much they promise you, is your friend or your unquestionable ally. They’re public servants, the kind that have let us down time and time again, not celebrities or prophets. Conflict will still be waged on innocent souls from other countries and it’s up to us as a country to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves, be it civilians in Gaza, Sudan, Iran, or wherever else western forces wish to shed blood and create suffering.
All this said, they flipped Texas and the Carolinas. Turn on the TV, it doesn’t matter what channel.
The midterm election this year effectively served as a memorandum on the Trump administration regime and, let me tell you, the people are fucking mad. Maybe it’s the fact that so many fell for blatant lies about a certain “peace president” who’d “bring prices down day one” sparking global conflict for no reason and ruining the global economy. It’s indicative of a certain point: no matter how cattle brained 65% of the country’s population is, there’s no propagandizing your way out of a situation as shitty as this. The cope on the right has been that;actually, it’s perfectly normal for the incumbent party to lose, ignoring the fact that Democrats flipped seats for Governor, Senate, and the House in such woke jurisdictions as Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, and more. It’s a frankly crazy showing in a race most had deemed a blood bath before it even began, yet I think pretty much everyone was shocked to see the extent of this blue tsunami wave.
Moreso exciting than a large set of wins for the lesser of two evils are certain key elections and the implications going forward. The real winner Tuesday was the Democratic Socialists of America, whose endorsed candidates won 149 seats all across the country. One loss that still spells big things for the future is the fact that Angie Nixon, an honest to God out-and-out socialist, came uncomfortably (for Ashley Moody) close to being a Florida (yes, that Florida) senator. And, while not affiliated with the DSA or socialism, the highly publicized senate race in Michigan went to Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, a candidate who fought an uphill battle from both parties, having to navigate campaigning amongst repugnant levels of bigotry from those who consider themselves “polite society” and millions upon millions of dollars from Israel-affiliated PACs being poured upon both his primary and election night competitors. It turns out, spending all of your time virtue signaling about Hasan Piker and fomenting racialized agitprop was the wrong move, leaving the establishment uniparty completely and totally befuddled.
There are numerous stories like this, of underdog candidates taking home victories previously considered impossible, spelling the potential for change in this country. Those of us on the left are used to ideas that electoral politics are, by default, performative at best, but there’s real potential for great things to come of this. Think about how many minority groups in parts of the bible belt will have the weight on their chests lightened, think about how much work can be done to codify rights for those groups. Think about how many transgender folks (especially children) woke up in a world that didn’t want them dead. Think about how many children of middle eastern background saw that people like El-Sayed could withstand hate and vitriol and come out on top. Think about the effect this could have on protecting our communities from the Gestapo.
I don’t know, maybe you think I sound like a brain-broken liberal, held captive by a framework that’s unrevolutionary and unproductive. Maybe I am, but even if you do feel that way, see the Bluemaggedon as an opportunity to take things even further. Look to those now radicalized by the system brutalizing them and pushing them further into financial destitution and see a potential to organize. See the people who now have proof that the Overton window doesn’t have to be so far to the right that it’s chilling in Bermuda—those are the people who can be convinced to join their local DSA chapters and/or organize locally. Those are the people who can be taught the value of community and praxis. There’s a real, tangible energy of hope from people who’ve thought hope was impossible for the past few years of imbecilic tyranny and, if you are the revolutionary you claim to be, you won’t tear them down to feel superior. You’ll turn that energy into something beautiful.
That’s how I see it, at least. This has been resident transgender creature Sean Ghoulson, pronouns She/They/It. Woke 3.0 is here and we’ve got to use it to build while we can.
