Happy Day Before All the Sales!
Ah, Thanksgiving. A time of family. A time of reminiscing. A time of questionable t-shirts. Truly, there is no other time of year like it. Seeing as how this is the mighty Toilet’s first Thanksgiving, I thought it would be appropriate to share with you all how thankful I am for this magical gift that has united us all in this delightful bowl we call home: Music.
I guess I can blame Guitar Hero for starting my infatuation with music. Something about holding that relatively solid chunk guitar shaped plastic and pulling off Green-Red-Blue legato runs just put me so much more in touch with the music (especially that awful cover of Sum 41’s Fat Lip). There was one jam that really stood out, however. A jam so chock full of riffs and aggression that it had a stranglehold on my heart immediately. It was none other than Pantera’s Cowboys from Hell (DIE HATERZ). Pantera was my White Rabbit, leading me down into the wonderland of metallic sounds.
I felt a connected to this music like nothing before, and the timing couldn’t have been better. I think it goes without saying that high school wasn’t a super great time for anyone currently reading a metal blog on the internet (and if it was, hey, go you!) and I am no exception. I was a weird kid in high school. Hell, I’m still a weird kid. I was picked on and bullied for being tiny. For wearing black. For having spiked hair and chains. Friends were few and far between, parents “didn’t get it,” but music…music was always there. It always had the right words. It always listened as I aired grievances. It healed when I hurt worst. I am thankful for those bad times because they taught me to appreciate music. It may have sucked 9 years ago, but it’s paying dividends now. I have a much greater appreciation for all things music and just how it can hit a person in a way that nothing else can.
Music, specifically metal, has been one of the best parts of my life for going on a decade. Not only has it helped me when I struggle, but it has connected me to a bunch of filthy dirtbags like you guys. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that this is the best heavy metal community on the interwebs right now. Thank you guys for being awesome, getting this place off the ground and elevating it. I can’t wait to see how this place grows and how the community will grow with it. Okay, that’s enough sappy shit for one post. What say we jam? Happy Thanksgiving and #StayVoid lifelovers!
