Track Premiere: Into the Storm – “Where the Merfalo Roam”
Like your sludge on the pretty end of the spectrum? Get a load of the mighty title track from Into the Storm‘s sophomore LP.
If you’re anything like me, the first question on your mind is, “What the shit is a Merfalo?” I’m pretty sure it’s a mermaid-buffalo, but I’ll let Into the Storm explain it: “Where the Merfalo Roam is a call to a bygone era where great waters covered much of the open the plains and large aquatic mammals grazed, Merfalo. You can still see evidence of this time in the derelict buildings scattered beside the highways of America.” Outrageous scientific untruths aside, it’s a description that fits Into the Storm’s style; unpretentious, yet unafraid to tackle headier subjects and grand-scale music.
“Where the Merfalo Roam” opens with taut, stilted riffage before opening up like a puzzle box into an expansive, brooding sludge soundscape. The track, featuring the dual violin work of Kim Pack and Sarah Pendleton of SubRosa, explores every inch of its surroundings while growing in size to fill the area of the room before exploding in a tremendous squall. The outro, highlighting the aforementioned violin work and a simple, clean guitar line feels like a well-deserved rest after an exhausting effort.
Where the Merfalo Roam drops November 11th. Preorder it here, then follow Into the Storm on Facebook.
