Formed by lifelong friends Zak Brady and Alex Malmquist and featuring help from Shagrat Gorbag (guitar) and Logan Griggs (drums), Reno’s Fog Wall might be the great death metal surprise of 2026. While the group’s debut Gloomweaver is anchored in the sound of Tucker-era Morbid Angel and a shared affinity for Type O Negative, the band also possesses the profane qualities of Soilent Green. Fog Wall doesn’t necessarily sound like the Nola sludge/grind band, but you can hear in “Mazarbul (Desolation)” the blueprints of Sewn Mouth Secrets. Step into the blackened dungeon of “Strangling Gloom” before “Fleshpot Ritual” slobberknocks you.
I always love when labels like Transylvanian Recordings release things out of their general purview. The recently released EP from Soda Pop fits the bill perfectly. This is pop-punk for grownups with jobs and regrets and joys and successes and failures and heartbreaks and triumphs and everything else. This is what happens when all those bands from your high school years grow up and mature with you. This is Saves the Day’s In Reverie reverse-engineered through the several iterations of the emo revival. This is Hot Water Music mellowed out and less gruff. I’m spinning in circles, daydreaming aloud.
Now why didn’t I think of that?! Boston’s Unhinged had the brilliant idea to play hardcore using Jimmy Bower’s guitar tone from In the Name of Suffering, channeling through that now-obvious-but-still-deranged sound the righteous fury and brazen corruption of our political moment. “Carrion Eagle” packs the C4. “Neoliberal Austerity Terrorist Operations” spools out the fuse. “What is Coming is Greater” flicks open the lighter. “A Certain Amount of Madness” looks upon the conflagration and knows it’s pure and true. Though we’re late to the party—Sinister Forces was released in November 2025—it’s never too late to join the revolution.
Out today on Deep Elm Records, Kvar is the Gothenburg-based Dorena’s third LP and first since 2013’s Nuet. Ever-so-slightly highlighting the -rock side of the post-rock configuration, Dorena keep things grounded to better ascend. From openers “Kastanj” and “Tree Climber” through the thumping “Heart Murmurs” to the ecstatic “Vittring,” I can’t help but think of Moving Mountains, Appleseed Cast, and Mono finding a spacious home together. The world is rotten with little recourse to hope. Or, as Camus has it, “The world I live in is loathsome to me, but I feel one with the men who suffer in it.”
