Riff Of The Week: Speed Edition
Pop quiz, hot shot – if you don’t vote for one of these riffs, your name officially becomes POSER by deed poll. What do you do? What do you do?
Last week we [excavated (a hole, tunnel, passage, etc) with an implement or (of animals) with feet, claws, etc to form a tunnel to make or force (one’s way)] deep for our Hole-y Edition. And once again, the flannel-clad grungey kids were out in full force to give Alice In Chains approx 1/3rd of the total vote and also smoke menthol cigarettes their friend Blake stole from his Mum’s purse before school. It’s like, whatever, y’know?
This week the theme was Speed. Here’s what you sent in…
Andrey Tkachenko
Steel – ‘Heavy Metal Machine’ (Riff @ 0:05)
Once upon a time in 1996, Dan Swano and the dudes from Opeth got drunk in the studio and decided to have some fun. This resulted in the best and most ridiculous ’80s speed metal EP released in the ’90s.
ZMapp
Scythelord – ‘Speed Metal War’ (Riff @ 0:15)
I was considering sending some Sonn O))) and making a “Speed’nt” joke. I wasn’t brave enough.
Howard Dean
The Reverend Horton Heat – “Psychobilly Freakout” (Riff @ 0:12)
Drugs.
Iron Goddess of Mercy
Cavity – “Last of the Final Goodbyes” (Riff @ 0:00)
If a super collider is a particle accelerator that sends charged particles into near light speed while combining them into a beam, then Cavity’s Supercollider is a riff accelerator that packs riffs on top of riffs while combining them into some sort of dangerous and unwieldy riff beam.
Lacertilian
Paradox – ‘Paradox’ (Riff @ 1:45)
Not sure if we’ve had a riff from this underrep’d classic appear before, time to fix that.
Next week’s theme is Mammal. Your riff must come from a song with a mammal of some sort mentioned in the title.
