By what standard is an artist’s ability—particularly a musician’s—to be measured? The answers to such a conundrum are likely as varied as those answering it. Be it technical skill, continual success, reach, or lasting influence, it is an interesting topic to mull over as I present to you the new project from members of genre stalwarts such as Pyrrhon, Weeping Sores, and Baring Teeth. Umulamahri is the name of this emerging experimental death metal entity and if you thought you have heard it all in the world of death metal, then you are in for a dismally wonderful treat.
The duo behind this project are none other than blog favorite Doug Moore on vocal and lyrical duty and guitar wizard Andrew Hawkins from Baring Teeth, who also claims the synth and sample responsibilities. Session drums are performed by seemingly more machine than man Kevin Paradis (Chaos Inception, Benighted, and tons more). A lineup such as this brings a level of expectation that may be difficult to overcome, but whatever your standard thoughts are going into a death metal release, I can tell you that it hurdles those expectations easily and then some.
