Drowning in the desert.

On May 29th, 2026, British purveyors of mournful death/doom Consecration will release their 4th full-length Exanimis via Nuclear Winter Records. Drawing on the early heavier works of genre leaders My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost as well as fellow Brits Decomposed and Enchantment, Consecration have crafted an approach that balances riffs and melody, sacrificing neither harmony nor heaviness in the pursuit of both. Lead single and album opener “Herald of Darkness” is as much a mid-paced, tank-treaded stomp as it is a falling away into the catacombs of despair. Tracks such as the excellent “Configurations of Lamentation,” “The Bitterness of Grief,” and “Descent into Derangement” follow a similar pattern, bridging the abyssal gap of endless sorrow with natty, double-bass-driven riffs bolstered by soaring solos and booming vocals. These various mid-tempo OSDM moments create a lot of necessary space for the lengthy passages of anguish and desperation on gloomy tracks such as “Domain of Despair,” “Harvester of the Forsaken,” and “Cold Grey Stone.” There is a lot of life left in Consecration even if the album title would have you think otherwise.

Today, we’re thrilled to bring you the album’s second single “Submerged in Sand.” The only track on Exanimis clocking in at under 4 minutes, “Submerged in Sand” is old school death metal through and through, packed with huge groovy riffs that’ll get your corpse dancin’ in whatever pit they dumped you and masterful solos that might even convince you that you’ve escaped your worm-eaten fate. Vocalist Daniel Bollans did my work for—and better than!—me and offered key insights into how he and the rest of the band approached composing “Submerged in Sand.” Bollans writes,

For this song, we wanted a full-on old school death metal style assault. Something snappy and straight to the point, that people at shows could totally get into and hopefully be a real headbanger! Lyrically, an idea that I had been wanting to explore for a while was a rather unfortunate individual becoming immobilized, then slowly sinking and drowning in sand. Frantically attempting to escape; yet this struggling only hastening their demise. Visually I remember being struck by the depictions of slowly dying in quicksand from some old movies—watching that shit as a kid leaves a bit of a mark haha! I thought the opportunity to elaborate on that would be quite a fun departure for me, instead of writing about grief and loss in the way I normally do. Musically, an effective bleak intro riff lulls you into a false sense of security before the crushing brutality begins. The music the guys wrote perfectly fits the theme, the riffs conjuring in my mind exactly the right feeling of claustrophobia from being enveloped and suffocated—and hitting hit hard like a torrent of sand caving in on you and sealing your fate. This is the shortest and probably the most brutal track we have ever written; we hope you enjoy it! We are proud to have some fantastic guest appearances on this album, and this track features a really special guest solo by Rich Mumford from Death Metal legends Malediction.

Guitarist Liam Houseago adds,

I thought of Rich as his approach to solos is always to add to the song, plus he can shred your tits off – so it was a perfect match. The song is a combination of me and Andy writing a death metal song that doesn’t overstay it’s welcome but has elements of our doomy side. Plus, we all love Bolt Thrower.

More succinctly, Mathew Bollans summarizes the track as

Heavy, fast and aggressive with a sickening solo and gut wrenching vocals.

And not to be outdone or overlooked, drummer Jorge Figueiredo describes the experience of “Submerged in Sand” as

A myriad of emotional riffs, transcribing to the audience, that every passage, every chorus, every riff, will put their ears in the same journey we went through composing the song.

Frankly, I’m chopped liver! Fortunately, we can all die in the quicksand together. Press play below and add Exanimis to your Bandcamp wishlist to purchase later this May.
