Exclusive Track Premiere: Diabolic Oath’s “Emblazoned Upon Ebony Winds”

A paean to evil incarnate and enflamed.

If 2024’s Oracular Hexations invoked a “looming Damoclean dread” as I wrote in my premiere for “Winged Ouroboros Mutating Unto Gold,” then “Emblazoned Upon Ebony Winds,” the first single from Diabolic Oath‘s forthcoming EP Unholy Barbaric Hymns, is what happens when the hovering sword misses the neck of the imperiled tyrant and instead wreaks further havoc on a world in constant chaos and daily disarray. Unholy Barbaric Hymns, out June 5th via Sentient Ruin, is thus a burning baptism, with ebony winds ablaze and Mars radiant in his rust-red war glory. It is 23 minutes of a lecherous inferno swallowing us all, vomiting us back up in a rapturous conflagration. In short: it’s a scorcher.

Today, we’re thrilled to bring an exclusive premiere of the aforementioned “Emblazoned Upon Ebony Winds.” Much like the other three songs on Unholy Barbaric Hymns, the EP’s opening track is stripped of all pretense and affectation. Though lofty in their pseudonyms–Chthonian Incursor, Ominous Void, The Temple–the three shrouded members of Portland’s Diabolic Oath have recommitted themselves to a bestial, almost war-metal state of death/black communion. All string instruments have been rendered fretless, the percussion gurgles up from the murk, and the three-headed vocal attack is as swirling as it is menacing. Beginning with a nauseating riff that immediately disjoints the listener, the song never relents. The riff grows ever more fulsome before the band drops into the smoldering caverns. In this brief moment of near-reprieve, you can hear the same kind of mid-pace leviathianism at work all over Oracular Hexations. From there multiple hammering, eccentric black metal riffs proceed, each one another kind of sonic bludgeoning. A recognizably fretless bass tone fights its way out of the raging torrent before the song drifts off like so much ash.
