Riff Of The Week: Judas Priest Edition
*screams* [in vengeance]
Before we crack out the leather let’s take a look at the results from last week’s Blue Edition. As you’ll see, submitting the first thing that comes to mind isn’t always the best method of attacking a theme. Also, Czral got his consolation prize for missing out on the finals of the Most Innovative Guitarist In Metal Tournament.
After finally getting around to checking out the new Judas Priest album last week I mentioned to Dubya and Masterlord how surprising it was I hadn’t heard more people talking about it; Firepower has gotta be some of their strongest work for decades. If you haven’t given it a proper crack yet, you’re missing out. Anyway, this week we asked for Judas Priest riffs but suggested you maybe not submit the most obvious/ubiquitous examples. Here’s what you sent in…
Ellipsis
Judas Priest – ‘Metal Meltdown’ (Riff @ 3:30)
This song sums up Judas Priest for me; from the opening solos, to the breakneck verses, to the snarling chorus. But the riff at 3:30 is the absolute highlight for me.
Positronic Brain
Judas Priest – “Better By You, Better Than Me” (Riff @ 0:00)
Because backmasking trial, and Rob singing a capella from the witness stand in court.
Wesselbr
Judas Priest – ‘Spectre’ (Riff @ 0:11)
If we aren’t supposed to go for the obvious picks, then why wouldn’t I just go for my favorite riff from the suprisingly awesome new album Firepower?
Richter
Devil Master – “Sex with Succubus” (Riff @ 0:01)
BREAKIN’ THE LAW, BREAKIN’ THE LAWWWWWW.
TheGranulatingJamesVanceyMilfs
Judas Priest – “Better By You, Better Than Me” (Riff @ 0:00)
Please don’t shoot yourselves while listening to this
Tom Warrior’s Beanie
Judas Priest – ‘The Sentinel’ (Riff @ 0:00)
A riff so awesome it doesn’t even need the rest of the band, but the second time around it does anyway just to kick your ass.
Lacertilian
Judas Priest – ‘Lightning Strike’ (Riff @ 0:00)
Playing around in that logo generator for a few minutes (where this plays on loop in the background) ended up getting the song stuck in my head for days. And it ruled.
Next week, it’ll already be time for our First Quarter Edition, so I wanna hear your fave riffs of 2018 so far.
If you send in some quality riffs, I might even buy the winner an album.
