Tag Diving: Dungeon Synth

He that has light within his own clear breast May sit in the centre, and enjoy bright day: But he that hides a dark soul and foul thoughts Benighted walks under the mid-day sun; Himself his own dungeon.
Welcome back to Tag Diving! It’s the column where I, your occasionally elusive host Reliquary Tower, pick a word or phrase and see what Bandcamp has to offer, much like how one might pick a food or an animal and see if they can find the remnants of such a thing in their local dumpster. This week we’re doing a little bit of a Dungeon Crawl crossover and seeing if I can find some goodies (spoiler alert: I can).
Warlock Corpse – Melodies for Ghosts
This article could easily be “Oops! All Warlock Corpse!” but I’ll stick to just this one for today. Not only is Melodies for Ghosts my favorite Warlock Corpse release, it’s maybe one of my favorite dungeon synth albums ever. It rides that line between active and passive listening well, and true to the album’s title, there really is something spectral about this record. The tracks stay pretty varied too. Thanks to a combination of said variety and a short runtime, Melodies for Ghosts does a great job keeping you from getting bored. Check this one out and if you like it, check out more from the project.
Conifère – L’Impôt du Sang
Do you like your black metal cold, folky, and absolutely rockin’? If so, might I suggest a little Conifère? I don’t know that there’s really much dungeon synth on this record, but MAN are there riffs! Every time I listen to L’Impôt du Sang it makes me wonder why I haven’t bought a tape yet. This last listen made me realize I need to get off my butt and do so! It’s a short one too, so if you’re still undecided, trust me, it’s worth 31 minutes of your time.
Bloody Keep – Rats of Black Death
We all know this article wouldn’t be complete without some Bloody Keep. It’s between this and Curta’n Wall’s Georgie the Dragon for my favorite Abysmal Spector release. Rats of Black Death is a killer album if you like raw, synthy, yoinky-sploinky black metal, and the riff from this track gets stuck in my head at least once a month.
