Sylvatica – Cadaver Synod (Target Group) [Symphonic Death / Folk Metal]
As Halloween approaches, my resistance to kitsch is quickly eroded: give me the siren calls of theremin; distorted orchestra hits; production as dry as a mummy’s chapped lips. Sylvatica’s sound is a shambling patchwork of Fleshgod Apocalypse pomp and dungeon synth ambience—melodeath draped in crumbling ornaments that carry the faint smell of mildew and incense. The available track “Titivillus” is overwhelming at first, but underneath the chaos, the structure is relatively simple, allowing the energetic riffing to support the host of auxiliary instruments. It’s hard to imagine what lies in store in the rest of these tracks, but whether they’re sweets or buried razorblades, I’m in. -Roldy
