This Toilet Tuesday (10/23/18)
It is once again Toilet Tuesday, and I gotta say, it feels like bands are intentionally aiming for October releases for their stuff. I know it hits that year-end sweet spot where reviewers have had time to sit on a record without it fading from memory, and October is the spookiest (and therefore most metal) time of year, but come on. Save something for January so we don’t have to scrape the bottom of the barrel hoping to find something decent. We’ll appreciate it that much more.
Whinging aside, we do have one of the strongest weeks of new releases in awhile, and that makes wading through the glut of music worth it. Even the slam and goregrind releases feel like exactly the right kind of stupid to be entertaining, and there’s more good than bad for a change. Hop on that list and tell me what I missed.

If you rewind a few years to a point where Nergal wasn’t spending his time making a total fucking dipshit of himself, Behemoth was blowing my younger self away with how insanely heavy those riffs and that gorilla-like voice was. Time and experience have changed things, of course, and going back to those songs doesn’t elicit quite the same surge of awe as they used to. That’s why I latched onto this Outre album so quickly; they sound like what my memories tell me Behemoth sounded like. This is peak Polish blackened death metal that not only hits all my nostalgia buttons, but taps into a wellspring of subtle dissonance that appeals to my current sensibilities. 10/26/18 (Spear)

I’m not going to pretend to know enough about Cryptopsy to run a TDT about them, but these two preview songs have me jazzed for this new release. They have that same blend of brutality and brains that makes Abnormality and Unfathomable Ruination so fun, but in a tiny four-song package. Get this if you want some nasty riffs without going full-on knuckle dragging. 10/26/18 (Spear)
