This Toilet Tuesday (12/6/16)

Oh, you thought you were done with music in 2016? Think again, nerds! The next Tuesday is always on the horizon, and the metal must flow. Take a break from arguing over your objectively wrong and terrible lists for a few minutes to jam some new tunes; we’ll all be happier for it. You just might find something you like, too.

Teramobil – Magnitude of Thoughts (Independent) [Instrumental Tech/Mathcore]

Was the last Brain Drill album not crazy enough for you? Maybe Gorguts feels a bit too straightforward for you these days? Then look no further; Teramobil has what you want.  Magnitude of Thoughts is equal parts tech death and mathcore, but without any vocals to get in the way of that sweet instrumental goodness. Don’t let that pretty album cover trick you- there’s plenty of noise and unresolved tension here, and the music’s as technical as it gets. This is not for the faint of heart. 12/6/16 (Spear)

Terra – Mors Secunda (Aural Music/Code666) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Apotheosis”

When it’s done right, atmospheric black metal can be a thoroughly meditative experience, one that I turn to with increasing frequency. Terra nails that sweet spot on Mors Secunda. It has just the right amount of repetition, breaks between vocals, and a splash of drone. It’s low and gritty with sublime production, perfect for this time of year. 12/9/16 (Spear)

Tears of Tragedy – Statice (Oyster Bros. Records) [Power Metal]
Listen to “Void Act”

I’d been planning on reviewing this as a joke based solely on the (literally) flowery cover art, but I found myself actually getting into it as I listened. Yes, the keyboardist’s hat is three inches short of a top hat. Yes, the production is saccharine sweet and sterile. Yes, this is borderline J-pop. None of that matters though; it riffs hard, it’s super catchy, and the shredding is absolutely glorious. Also, based on this teaser, it sounds like every single track could potentially be the opening theme for an anime. That’s always a plus, right? 12/7/16 (Spear)
