This Toilet Tuesday (3/16/21)
It’s new release day, and if you’re as sleep-deprived as I am this morning, you’re going to need some banging tunes to help get you through the day. Hans and Karhu have us covered on that front, highlighting a handful of new albums of various genres and levels of bangingness. It’s a hefty week for new tunes in general, so you’re likely to find some additional enjoyable releases down in that list below.
Hapless Wretch – Vol. 1 (Independent) [Blackened Death Metal]
Stream
Yeah, why not. Why not mask the fact that you’re basically playing standard HM-2 death by dialing your shrieks to 11 and obscuring them to hell and back with all manner of effects. The result is something like OSDM mixed with earlier Anaal Nathrakh. A peculiar mix, sometimes too intense for its own good, but mostly pretty entertaining if you’re into wretched vocal performances and don’t mind the drum machine. 3/15/21 (Hans)
Rale – Psychic Devastation (Independent) [Death Metal]
Stream
A death metal band with an unconventional name and produced by Colin Marston might already be enough to whet your appetite. If it isn’t, know that this is really fun stuff with several surprising twists in terms of rhythms and riffs that place it just a little bit outside the box, enough to make it engaging. And it certainly helps that Menegroth Man once again knows exactly what he’s doing, giving the sound a fitting bit of rancidness and murk. 3/15/21 (Hans)
Suppressive Fire – Invasion (Independent) [Black Thrash]
Stream
You know you’ve missed Suppressive Fire. Suppressive Fire knows you’ve missed Suppressive Fire. Your neighbour’s mother knows you’ve missed Suppressive Fire. And luckily for your aching heart, and tender loins, their brand of savage, blackened and dead/thly thrash hasn’t changed much, only gotten sharper. And this time you have a chance to get a hella siqqq holographic sticker which alone should have you buying the EP right now. 3/15/21 (Karhu)
Lunar Shadow – Wish to Leave (Cruz del Sur Music) [Heavy Metal]
Listen
Four years ago Lunar Shadow released an awesome debut full of riffs, melodies and harmonies from an ancient age, woven into the tapestry of deliberate, and sometiems doomy heavy metal. On The Smokeless Fires a new vocalist was introduced, with a gothic flavour and even a post-punk influenced ditty, and though they still clung firmly onto their heavy metal side, the sound was that of a very different band. Now that post-punk ditty has essentially been expanded into a full-length that screams, “Spank me with your Idle Hands, daddy!” The sound is distinctly different, and the heavy metal is still there, below the surface, but the songwriting is easily the dullest and least memorable from the band thus far, and reeks of jumping the shark, regardless of how much it’s been hinted at before (it’s fully available on other streaming platforms). Unto Other-lite that I can’t too warmly recommend. 3/19/21 (Karhu)
Fuath – II (Season of Mist) [Black Metal]
Listen
The debut of this Saor side-project did not stray far from Andy Marshall’s main gig, though it had dropped the folk instruments, and influences. This sophomore finds more footing of it’s own in darker atmosphere, better individual riffs and more distinct, complete and dynamic compositions. Black metal somewhere between the modern atmoblack wave and the second wave. 3/19/21 (Karhu)
