This Toilet Tuesday (3/6/18)
It is once again Toilet Tuesday, and we have the musics. Notably fewer than a typical week; apparently everyone read Brenocide’s thoughtful dissertation on the oversaturation of metal yesterday and decided to cancel their albums. Hans and I picked out a couple of the stragglers for your consideration, but there’s more in the list below. Tell us what’s good.
Gortuary – Divine Indigenous Sacrament (Amputated Vein Records) [Brutal Death Metal]

Normally I wouldn’t blurb stuff like this because I feel like the genre tag says enough, but Gortuary add a layer of thoughtfulness to the proceedings. The initial frenzy and satisfying gutturals are par for the course, but it soon becomes apparent that these folks also have some technical chops (apart from just playing super fast) that they subtly show off. Both the creative drumming and the blistering guitar solos were very unexpected. Perhaps nothing to woo tech nerds, but together with that vocalist, it’s enough to make this very promising. 3/9/18 (Hans)
Between the Buried and Me – Automata I (Sumerian Records) [Progressive Metalcore]

Between the Buried and Me seemed to be moving in a lighter, more modern prog-style direction with Coma Ecliptic and Parallax. If you were disappointed with this (read: wrong), then you should be happy to know that Automata I is definitely a little nastier, sounding like something of a combination of Coma and The Great Misdirect, but with some new stuff thrown in there. Closing track “Blot” is far and away the star of the show, opening with some nasty grooves and unfolding with typical BTBAM-epic grandiosity. The album is a bit shorter than expected, but it’s a solid listen through and through. 3/9/18 (Spear)
