O Chthonian Crapper, O Sage ov Stool, resolve the blockage in our bowels. This week we’ve got devilish dinos, ass-ghosts, and herds of swine. Verheerer – Urgewalt (Vendetta Records) [Melodic Blackened Death]
When deer lock antlers in battle, it can be a death sentence for both parties—mammalian mutual assured destruction. Human nations are much the same, as the barbed wire on Urgewalt‘s art attests—and what better way to demonstrate the horrors of our unending wars than black metal? Preview tracks “Totenvolk” and “Hail Mary” are severe in their messages and melodies, taking influence from Agalloch‘s doom-inflected dreariness and post-metal’s oceans of reverb. What little heat survives comes from the charred vocals and warm production, reminiscent of Anicon‘s Exegeses; there’s a similar cross-pollination of death, black, and heavy styles as well. From the spoken word finale of “Hail Mary” to the wailing solos in “Totenvolk,” the full album is bound to include additional surprises, like so much unexploded ordnance. -Roldy
