Baron – Beneath the Blazing Abyss (Transcending Obscurity Records) [Death/Doom] (Track Premiere)
As the severed head overlooking this infernal shrine, I’m something of an authority on Baron’s debut LP. Beneath the Blazing Abyss was cast from the pearly gates and hit every circle of Hell on the way down. “Incinerated Evil” passes through the Circle of the Slammers, where the cargo-shortéd must forever attempt Joyce’s Ulysses in place of palm-muted power chords. “Primordial Possession”‘s winding path touches on the Circle of the -Cores (condemned to an eternal circle pit), and “Bound to the Funeral Pyres” even wades through the Circle of the Doomers, which is actually just a legion of drummers waiting in line at a job fair. I know not which suffering souls await in the remaining tracks, but it’s a safe bet they’ll be swathed in soot, courtesy of the crisp production that leaves no barrier between listeners and the brimstone below. -Roldy
