The Spirit – Of Clarity and Galactic Structures (Art of Propaganda Records) [Progressive Blackened Death]

Among the myriad goodies coming out this week, it was The Spirit that captured my interest the most; here’s some well-produced, well-engineered proggy black metal that shares more of its melodic DNA with prog death acts like Contrarian than anything else. It’s instrumentally captivating and easy on the ears, and I like that the lyrics approach existential anxieties over the typical black metal fare- the prog setting is the perfect backdrop for such explorations. That aside, the music alone is worth the listen, ticking all the boxes I look for in black metal. 4/29/22 (Spear)
