Gràtfall – Thanatopsis (Independent) [Meloblack]
With Thanatopsis, Gràtfall invites listeners into a velvet-lined coffin; draped in reverb, the blackened tremolo riffing is dulled to a pleasant hum, as if heard from another world. Like Svrm and Рожь before them, the band carefully balances melancholy with heaps of folk melodies, evoking impoverished villages and the hunger that haunts them. The acoustic guitar and brass instrumentation in EP closer “Unmade – Conjoined” are effectively funereal; at the end of this 30-minute descent, we are returned to the soil, ready for whatever comes next.
