This Toilet Tuesday (4/12/16)
Hello and welcome to another round of This Toilet Tuesday! We’ve got a lot of solid new releases this week with a broad range of styles and sounds spanning the spectrum of metal in its vast variety. W and I have picked out a couple choice cuts for you here, but there’s plenty more to be had below. Let’s get to it!
Back to R’Lyeh – The McMurdo Expedition 1909 (Independent) [Avant-garde Metal]
Stream
Another week, another offbeat release for Dr. Allovertheplace to cover and you to ignore. In this week’s case, though, you really should give The McMurdo Expedition a chance, because it’s totally rad. When we think Lovecraftian metal, we usually imagine spiraling dissonance and abyss-belching vocals, but Back to R’lyeh take a decidedly different tack by playing rocking riffs accented with uplifting bell and chime ornamentations that offset the gloomy growls when they do appear. The winsome, layered vocals in the opening track make me want to grab my cane and take a jaunty stroll into the spaces between angles, but closer “The Kadishtu Brotherhood” is the real highlight with its rocking riffs and delicious bass noodling. Tasty, not a word I’ve ever used in relation to Lovecraft before. FFO: Howls of Ebb, Tribulation, Fantomas 4/11/16 (W.)
Howls of Ebb – Cursus Impasse: The Pendlomic Vows (Caligari/I, Voidhanger/Nuclear War Now!) [Weird Death]
Stream
Howls of Ebb continue the tradition of peddling some of the most mystifying, confounding metal around, but this time, they’ve brought more riffs. And solos. These solos rule and sound like interdimensional beasts bangin’. Don’t believe me? Skip to 0:58 in “The 6th Octopul’th Grin.” If you don’t mind expanding your consciousness and getting a little sticky, you’re going to love having your reality destroyed by Cursus Impasse. Just don’t forget a towel. FFO: AEvangelist, Grey Heaven Fall, Shining (Nor) 4/15/16 (W.)
Woman Is The Earth – Torch of Our Final Night (Init Records) [Black Metal]
Stream
I had the pleasure of seeing Woman Is The Earth live last month at my local trees’n’shit festival (put on by none other than Austin Lunn of Panopticon), and I was struck by their intricate guitar work and song structure. It’s no secret that a lot of black metal bands tend to be singular in their musical and thematic focus, but WITE aren’t one of them. Torch of Our Final Night traverses a winding path through odd chords, groovy interludes, emotional tapped leads, and even a bit of doom. It’s different, but just familiar enough to sink its hooks in instantaneously. 4/15/16 (Spear)
Hemotoxin – Biological Enslavement (Unspeakable Axe Records) [Death/Thrash]
Listen to “Forgotten Faces,” “Transparent Eyes”
Unspeakable Axe continues their streak of killer releases with Hemotoxin, who bring you everything you could want in a thrashy death metal record. Biological Enslavement builds a solid foundation of monstrous riffs and drums, expanding skywards with soaring leads and intense dueling guitars. If you worship at the temple of the riff, don’t skip this. 4/15/16 (Spear)
