Somebody over at M-A didn’t eat enough (kanonen)fieber this week, as the droppings are relatively slim this time around. However, there is much variety in the consistency of what’s available—from Christian funeral doom to a slew of heavy metal, you’re bound to be soiled and spoiled for choice. Dive in, the water’s murky!
Chronicle – Where Chaos Thrives (Mighty Music) [Melodeath]
Apparently, this band has a storied past—they’ve actually been toiling away for over a decade, and it shows in the effortless fluidity of their songwriting. Chronicle plays melodeath with an emphasis on the latter half of the genre, blending extreme metal drumming with luscious melodies into something ironically distant from chaos. The ~8-minute closer showcases the band’s snappy production (the faintest hint of ping on the snare is siqqqq), inspirations from Nevermore to tech death and post-metal, and even a poignant classical guitar outro. If this track is any indicator of Where Chaos Thrives‘ overall quality, this album will be causing bedlam during list season. -Roldy
